America’s Drunkest and Driest Counties

Alcohol abuse map. See the most drunk and sober states in the US

This website intoxistates.com provides an interactive map of excessive drinking by county. The map leverages data from the latest annual datasets of the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R) program.

According to the definition presented, excessive drunkenness (heavy drinking) is defined as the consumption of 8 alcoholic drinks per week by a woman and 15 by a man (1 alcoholic drink is considered to be a bottle of beer, a glass of wine or a glass of strong alcohol).

In the map presented, the dark colours show the most dissipated counties, while the green colour represents those counties with the least drinking. The most dissipated county in America is Gallatin, Montana, where more than a quarter (26.8 per cent) of residents abuse alcohol. The least drunk county is Utah in the state of the same name, where only 9.04% of residents abuse alcohol.

Looking at the results on the map through the lens of specific states, it is apparent that the most abusive state is Wisconsin. More than 25% of its residents abuse alcohol, the highest average among the states. On the opposite side of the pile is the state of Utah, where an average of 12% of residents abuse alcohol. This low score in Utah may be due to the fact that the area has the highest population of Mormons in the US, who shun alcoholic beverages. In addition to Utah, relatively low alcohol consumption is found in the south of the country in states such as Oklahoma, Arkansas and Alabama.
