Battles of World War II map

Battles of World War II map is a great tool for learning about the history of WWII. It features the most important battles and military operations of the period.

Historymaps is a project that aims to present the most important battles related to specific armed conflicts around the world. In this case, battles taking place during the Second World War are depicted on the map. Currently, the tool depicts around 1,000 battles, sieges and military operations that were part of this conflict. The visualisation is very detailed and refined in this respect. It includes clashes from practically every continent, even individual small skirmishes.

When you enter Battles of World War II website, you are presented with a map on which the battles are marked. You can navigate the map in two ways. The first is to freely move the map and search for the battles you are interested in. Then, by clicking on the battle you are interested in, a note will be displayed on the right-hand side, with the most important information about the event – the area of operations, within which campaign or operation the battle was fought, the start and end date, and the type (e.g. naval or land). In addition to the basic information, each battle includes a link to a Wikipedia article that further expands on the selected clash. For some of the larger and more well-known battles, videos describing the battles are also included.

The second way to handle the visualisation is to use the timeline option, located at the bottom right of the page. After clicking on it, we are taken to the same view with notes that appears when we click on a given battle from the map level. In this case, we can freely search for battles using the axis, which is facilitated by the numbers next to each battle. The lower the number of the battle, the earlier it took place.

Battles of World War II map is full of details and interesting information, making it a great tool for use, for example, as part of history teaching in schools. The author of the project is constantly working on expanding the application, and within the same project he has similar visualisations concerning, for example, the American Revolution.
