Google Research has launched Language Explorer, an innovative interactive web platform that allows users worldwide to explore the rich diversity of over 7,000 languages spoken across the globe.
The tool serves as a visual and searchable gateway to linguistic data, powered by LinguaMeta — Google’s open-source language metadata repository. LinguaMeta harmonizes information from 19 different sources into a unified, accessible dataset, covering details such as:
- Number of speakers
- Endangerment status (from “safe” to “extinct”)
- Writing scripts used
- Geographic distribution (countries and regions)
- Language codes (including BCP-47 tags, Glottocodes, and Wikidata IDs)
- Endonyms (native names) and macrolanguage groupings
The centerpiece of Language Explorer is a highly responsive, interactive world map built with WebGL and Three.js technology, featuring draggable navigation, zoom capabilities, and clickable pins that reveal detailed language profiles. Users can search by language name, country, or region, filter languages alphabetically (A–Z), or browse global overviews highlighting statistics like 7,000+ languages, representation across 190+ countries, and use of 159 scripts.
This project builds on Google’s broader Language Inclusion initiative, which leverages AI and research to reduce barriers for underrepresented and low-resource languages. The underlying LinguaMeta dataset stems from work presented in a 2024 research paper at LREC-COLING, and the data remains openly available on GitHub for researchers, developers, linguists, and enthusiasts to download, explore, or contribute improvements via issues and pull requests.
Language Explorer has quickly gained recognition in the design and tech communities, earning features such as Site of the Day on Awwwards (January 16, 2026), CSS Design Awards Website of the Day (December 2025), and praise for its sleek, animated 3D globe visualization of global linguistic diversity.
By making previously scattered or paywalled linguistic information freely accessible and visually engaging, Google aims to raise awareness about language endangerment, support preservation efforts, and empower anyone—from academics to curious individuals—to discover how languages shape human culture and geography.
