Rename World Map: When internet users decide on geographic names

What would maps and atlases look like if geographical names were decided by internet users? Rename World lets you see what the results of such an experiment could look like.

The website features an interactive world map where users propose new names for places on Earth and vote on other people’s suggestions. The project is mainly for entertainment and shows how the online community can collectively create an alternative vision of world geography.

The creators decided to impose as few restrictions as possible on users and fully rely on the community’s creativity. The application allows you to click on any point on the map and change its name. As a result, an alternative vision of the world emerges, filled with often humorous and light-hearted names.

Importantly, using the service is very simple – it usually doesn’t even require creating an account. Thanks to this, users can quickly add new ideas and participate in voting. The ranking of the most frequently changed names is currently led by Japan, the United States, and North America. Among the most modified places, countries and continents dominate.

At the moment, humorous naming clearly prevails on the site. Denmark has been dubbed “Legoland”, San Marino is called “The Vatican, but a bit bigger”, and Greenland has been named “Mercator Projection Error”.

Rename World can be treated as an interesting socio-geographical experiment that shows how places around the world are perceived by the internet community. Some countries and cities that have become the subject of the biggest jokes can breathe a sigh of relief that the names shown on the site will not appear in the latest editions of atlases!
