The China Index Map. Measuring PRC Influence Around the Globe

The China Index map shows how much influence China has on individual countries in the world in areas such as science, politics, economy, media and military.

The China Index is a project by Doublethink Lab, an organization founded in 2019 in Taiwan that focuses on researching China’s global influence and countering disinformation operations and authoritarian digital influences. This initiative aims to measure and compare the extent of the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) impact on various countries and territories worldwide, offering a data-driven perspective to assess the severity of this influence across regions and domains.

The China Index evaluates China’s influence across nine main domains: academia, domestic politics, economy, foreign policy, law enforcement, media, military, society, and technology. Each domain is analyzed using a set of indicators (99 in the first edition) that correspond to specific, observable phenomena of PRC influence. Data is collected by local experts in the studied countries—scholars, journalists, researchers, or community leaders—who provide evidence of the presence or absence of these phenomena. The results are then quantified and normalized, enabling the creation of country rankings and comparisons of China’s influence across domains.

China exerts the greatest influence on countries such as Pakistan, Cambodia, and Singapore.
