The White House is in ruins. This is what it looks like now in satellite photos

Satellite images reveal a shocking transformation at the White House: the historic East Wing, a cornerstone of the U.S. presidential residence, has been completely demolished.

In its place, President Donald Trump is spearheading the construction of a lavish 8,000-square-meter ballroom, a $300 million project that has ignited fierce backlash from historians, Democrats, and preservationists who decry the destruction as a desecration of American heritage.

Demolition began on October 21, just days after Trump announced the project. Initially, the president assured the public that the iconic White House structure would remain untouched, stating in July that “no changes to the existing building” were planned. However, as Reuters reports, a reassessment deemed razing the East Wing “cheaper and structurally sounder.” Satellite imagery from Planet Labs PBC, comparing the site between September 26 and October 23, shows piles of debris and heavy machinery where the wing—home to the first lady’s offices, staff quarters, and ceremonial rooms—once stood.

The project, funded privately by tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, as well as Lockheed Martin, also includes a personal contribution of “millions” from Trump himself. The proposed ballroom, designed to host up to 1,000 guests for state dinners and banquets, fulfills what Trump claims has been a 150-year dream of past presidents to expand the White House’s limited space. “To do it right, we had to take down the existing structure,” Trump told Axios.
