“Correct the Map” Campaign Redefines Africa’s Place on the World Stage

The “Correct the Map” campaign is gaining momentum, aiming to reshape how Africa is perceived on maps and in global media. Led by African activists, artists, and scholars, the initiative challenges longstanding geographic distortions and stereotypes that have marginalized the continent for centuries.

Organizers highlight that traditional maps, based on the Mercator projection, significantly downsize Africa, making it appear smaller than its true scale. “Africa is larger than the United States, China, India, Japan, and all of Eastern Europe combined, yet the maps we use fail to reflect this reality,” said Aisha Okeke, a key campaign leader. The initiative promotes alternative projections, like the Peters projection, which more accurately represent the continent’s proportions.

The campaign has rolled out educational workshops, interactive exhibitions, and vibrant social media efforts to spark global reflection on how maps shape perceptions. A recent panel discussion in Nairobi showcased new digital tools that allow users to create maps reflecting Africa’s true size.

Gaining international recognition, the campaign has been praised by outlets like The Standard for its role in dismantling historical biases. Organizers plan to collaborate with educational platforms and digital mapmakers to drive lasting changes in global cartographic standards.
